This is the name of Kiyoshi’s elementary school where he will go to Kindergarten in September.
Strange name wouldn’t you say? There were other options – a Prime Minister, an astronaut, but no let’s name it after a rock?
So we did some research and found some very interesting history. Thousands of years of it in fact.
And we thought, well maybe it is a good name for the school. But who are we kidding. Buffalo Rubbing Stone Elementary School? Really.
So, some history. Turns out there really is a “buffalo rubbing stone” in our neighborhood. In Panorama Hills, on the north side of Country Hills Blvd.
This “erratic” is a leftover traveler from many moons ago when sheets of ice flowed through what is now our neighborhood of crowded urban sprawl. Over time the buffalo came to use the rock to rub off their heavy winter coats, maybe to give Leonardo di Caprio some material to make a warm cover for those days that climate change wasn’t there to keep him warm.
Of course I poke fun at it all but it is kind of neat to have an historic relic sitting right in our neighborhood. And really if they didn’t give the school such a dumb name we would never have known about it.
For those who are interested, and have good eyesight or on screen view the official story is below.
And because I’m hearing from people that they don’t know where this wonderful historic landmark could possibly be, here’s the Google Maps location. Note the carefully placed McDonalds in the bottom left to give a recognizable starting point.
