Disclaimer: This Post is many (many) months old. But I blew up 24/7 Kiyo at some point. And blew up is putting it mildly. It failed on everything and it was different failures depending on which device I was using (failed to upload image from anything, failed to save draft from iPhone, …) But thanks to some handy tools and plugins and now that iOS 11 is out of beta, we’ve got our detonators Hans and we’re back in business. And just because I can’t be completely out of beta ever, I installed the beta version of the WordPress app on my phone. But it still works! At least for now it does…..
Sooooo….. Gingy….. I’m a little slow in this life so it takes me a while to connect the dots.
Kiyoshi has been watching Shrek on Netflix it’s one of his new favourites. I’ve never watched Shrek so this whole Kiyoshi/Gingy episode was a mystery to me.
Gingy.
It started at Green Shopping. Wait go back. I’m not sure what for but ok sure. Not this row. Not this row. This one. He takes me to the baking aisle. And picks up a bag of brown sugar and shows me the label. “Gingy!” He says.
Ok so the bags are lying flat on the shelf so I’m not sure how he knew that Gingy was on the label of the bag but ok that was pretty funny.
On a different day we were playing hide and seek and Kiyoshi says – I’m not hiding in the candy coverd (cupboard). Clues… yes. I’m slow.
A few days later (oh boy, it really hits me now, yes slow,. . . uh no clue.) . . . we were making (that’s what Kiyoshi calls “baking”) muffins or something I can’t remember what. I got the brown sugar out of the pantry and oh rats it was dry. I keep it in a Ziploc bag to try to slow down the drying out process but it’s Calgary and things dry out here. And somehow I didn’t close it properly so anyways I got a new bag of sugar (because it’s always good to keep a spare bag of brown sugar handy) and when I put it back and made sure I closed the Ziploc .
Now here’s where it comes together. It only took me two weeks to figure out what he was saying (Tara will tell you it was longer but there’s no way, I may be slow but I’m clevr too).
Now that I’ve put the bag back where I think I was keeping it, Kiyoshi looks down at the bag and points to Gingy! on the label.
I said yes! And then I said wait a minute, is that how you knew the bags at Green Shopping had Gingy on them?
Kiyoshi: Yes.
Daddy: Well how did you know Gingy was on the package?
Kiyoshi: I saw him
Daddy: When do you see him?
Kiyoshi: ……….
Daddy: Um … have you been eating the brown sugar?
Kiyoshi: Yes…
Daddy: Is that why the bag was open?
Kiyoshi: Yes…
Okay then it was really hard to say anything. He’s such a good kid and he’s honest and he is telling me and that’s great. And besides I couldn’t contain myself I was ROTFLing.
Now this also explains why he’s been calling the pantry the “candy coverd” (he hasn’t translated to call it cupboard or pantry and I’m very helpful and I don’t correct him). I had been thinking that it’s so odd he calls it a candy coverd because there’s no candy in it. Treats and snacks maybe (Welch’s gummies and Fibre 1 bars) but we keep all the candy in the hallway closet because there’s more room. I’m kidding. No really I’m kidding there’s not that much candy in the house even if Katie and Ash tell you different.
Speaking of Candy, we took a drive to Nanton to shop at “The Candy Store” where you can get all of the penny and nickel candy from the eighties except now they are loonie and toonie candies. On the way there he said Gingy again. I can’t remember how it came up, I think we were playing what does that cloud look like. He sees one and says it looks like Gingy. Wow, that’s a lot of Gingy on his mind.
On the way home we met up with one of his friends for dinner. I— is one of the original Kids&Company daycare crew he’s been with since 2012. So we met up with her parents F&D at White Spot which is also funny because F&D are also from Vancouver so of course we go to the BC restaurant in Calgary.
We were telling them about our trip to Nanton. So F was asking Kiyoshi about candy.
F – “Hey Kiyoshi do you like candy?”
Kiyoshi – his whole face lights up and he grins from ear to ear and nods his head
F – “What’s your favourite candy?”
Kiyoshi – “Gingy!”
Yes it’s all about Gingy. And listening for clues. It all makes sense. Now excuse me while I go study the package labels on everything else in the candy coverd.
