Tastes great! Less filling!

Back in the 70’s when our parents were just hoping we weren’t paying attention to a pair of gruff football players on TV commercials with Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith going about Miller Lite – tastes great – less filling – and what that meant (uh I did have to Google part of that I couldn’t remember Bubba Smith) somehow it still got stuck in our heads and today on a different day it turns out that it’s neither.

It’s a regular comedy around here when we don’t have the right milk in the fridge because who makes cream of mushroom soup with skim milk?  I actually did drink skim milk for quite some time and it was always like the daylight version of tonic water in a nightclub because it looked like it had a blue tint. Or maybe it was just because the label and caps on skim milk are blue that it makes the milk seem blue too.

Well now it makes Kiyoshi blue too.

And also back in the 70’s (maybe 80’s) there was this new milk called 1%.  At least it was new in Vernon.  I didn’t Google that.  It is truly bizarre what things your brain processes and retains. Because I remember when we switched to 1%.  This was back in the day when we bought our milk in a bag and you put a pouch in a plastic jug and cut a corner off of the pouch to pour a glass and hoped that the rest of the pouch stayed fresh in the fridge.

Little guy has always had homo milk.  In a pinch I’ll give him a glass of my 1% and he won’t say anything but it would seem the gig is up.  I ran out of homo milk and gave him a glass of 1% last night.  After half a glass he comes and sits beside me and puts his milk down.

Glass half empty or half full.

Daddy there’s something wrong with my milk.  I said what? No it’s good I just had a glass.  And he said no Daddy! It’s .. it.. tastes bad.  How do you mean tastes bad?  Well it’s kind of like … well it’s like when I’m drinking water…..

Now Tara bursts out laughing and says Good job kid you’ve got good taste.  At which point I have to explain to him that I was distracted buying him the cookies and cream milk at Green Shopping and I forgot to get him his homo milk so I gave him mine.  What’s yours? Uh 1%.

And at then end of this different day, it turns out that light milk neither tastes great nor is it less filling. Not sure what makes it taste less filling but it just seemed to go with the commercial.
